Meet Marc Linn: The Passionate Owner Behind Rapid City's Best Barcade

I got to sit down with Marc Linn, the owner of Press Start arcade bar and an old friend who makes amazing movies and has inspired me to keep going on more than one occasion. His story is a little bit mishap and a little bit hidden genius. This arcade is a passion project that started when he was too young to imagine what it could be. 

Marc's love for classic arcade games started when he was just 10 years old, playing Pac-Man, Frogger, and Rally X at the mall arcade. That childhood spark eventually turned into a serious collection. He gathered every game system from the Atari 2600 to the Commodore 64 and eventually started buying arcade games, building what would eventually become Rapid City's largest retro gaming collection.

What’s even more crazy….Marc found a Ms. Pac-Man machine for just $50 after college. That machine is still on the floor at Press Start today! His collection exploded to over 80 games, growing so fast that his family actually staged an intervention, thinking he had a hoarding problem.

How Press Start Became Rapid City's Go-To Entertainment Destination

The transformation from hobby to business happened when the Kol restaurant owners approached Marc about showcasing his vintage arcade collection in their basement. What started as a side project for Marc (who was running a successful video production company and making movies at the time) quickly proved more profitable than his film work.

When COVID-19 hit and Kol closed their doors, Marc made a bold move. With family support and financing, he bought the entire establishment. Now, as the sole owner of Press Start Rapid City, he has the freedom to rotate through his collection of over 300 games and continuously invest in new machines.

We still go play pinball and have tournaments among ourselves and when my middle daughter comes home for the summer, we have plans to beat Gauntlet: The Legend.
